"Squid Row, a tiny ex-dive bar on Capitol Hill, opened in late 1986 with music by a jazz-fusion house band; six months later, as booked by Terry Lee Hale, it invited punk/noise bands (which were now being referred to by the "grunge rock" moniker. Tiny (patrons tripped over bands' monitors just inside the door), dark, and smoky, it was a perfect place to sway with a sardine-pack of bodies while sharing in the big-beat MDA trance music of the U-Men, Soundgarden, and Catbutt; alternating with the softer sounds of theWalkabouts, ex-San Franciscan folkster Jimmy Silva...Gus Mustard and Sylvan Smith's Paisley Sin...and John Massoni's understated and melancholy Weather Theater."
